You can pay to see women topless in porn videos and strip clubs, but the moment a woman owns her body, it’s shameful. In New York, it wasn’t legal for men to be topless in public until the 1930s.

Bare ankles used to be considered inappropriate for women. Women should be able to do what they want with their bodies.

The man behind a new documentary claiming to expose the dark side of life at a Goldfields hotel has defend his film from local criticism.

Set to premiere at the Sydney Film Festival on Friday, Hotel Coolgardie tells the story of the "hellish" experience of Finnish backpackers Lina and Steph during three months work at Coolgardie's Denver City Hotel."Harangued by their new boss, relentlessly pursued and pilloried by booze-addled patrons and prey to the madness and malaise of an environment as claustrophobic as it is isolated," the film's synopsis reads.

The release of the trailer this week sparked a torrent of criticism from residents of Coolgardie, 500km east of Perth, and its Goldfields neighbours.

But director Pete Gleeson said there was more to the film that the portrayal of drunken locals.

"I guess if you're from Goldfields tourism, you're not going to want to have viewers think what's in the film is emblematic or typical of the Goldfields experience," he said."Our concern was in an observational film about a particular situation; it's up to the audience to decide."The trailer highlights the drunken behaviour of the Denver City's patrons, with the backpackers described as "fresh meat' by one patron and asked for sex by another."You eat seals and shit, don't you? Gleeson said he had told the story of "outsiders" trapped in a difficult situation."Not only to be an outsider, but what it means to be part of the dominant culture or majority and what responsibility that might entail," he said."There's humour in it, and there's great pathos in it; it's not just about two girls who come out to the Goldfields and have a crap time."The filmmakers shot more than 90 hours of footage while following the girls during 2012, with plenty of footage omitted from the 80-minute final product.

Gleeson conceded his focus was on the moments that had the heaviest impact on the two backpackers."Of course there were times when people treated them kindly and with generosity," he said.
